Who? What? Where? When? How?
Mrs. G’s Sped Class is created by me, Mrs. G (which has been my teacher's name since I started in 2012, since my last name wasn't the easiest for my students with disabilities to say). I graduated from the University of Maryland with my Master's in Special Education in 2012. From there, I started teaching in a self-contained high school in Prince George's County Public Schools. It was a sink-or-swim type of situation. I was fortunate enough to be mentored by two experienced special education teachers, which made my first few years full of experience and progress beyond what I was taught in school. I achieved one of my greatest accomplishments in my career, I got my 10th-grade class from below grade level to on or above grade level within one school year. During this time, I was also in school at George Washington University to get my post-master's certification in educational leadership. I then moved to another high school in DC, and eventually I made my way back to Prince George's County. My special education journey has me now as an IEP facilitator, a person who oversees the implementation of an IEP in school, supporting students with special education during COVID.
After COVID, I took a break from education. Although I had been successful, I felt that my skills would be better utilized outside the classroom. However, that break lasted less than two years. I found myself missing public school, teaching, and working in special education.
I returned to work as a middle school teacher at a non-public school that specialized in students with learning disabilities on a diploma track. This experience reignited my passion for the classroom and the joy of seeing my students succeed. However, I still longed to be back in the public education sector. As a result, I took on a role as an IEP Facilitator, where I ensure that students receive the services they need, teachers are properly trained, and parents are informed.
This brings me to Mrs. G's Special Education Class, a space where I can share my knowledge with anyone who needs it, whether they are in my school or beyond. To me, education is fundamental, and special education is the vital support that underpins it. In this environment, I aim to assist families and teachers as they nurture the next generation of students both inside and outside the classroom.
